Genomic stability of Legionella pneumophila isolates recovered from two cardiac transplant patients with nosocomial Legionnaires' disease.

چکیده
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis revealed that multiple consecutive isolates of Legionella pneumophila from two cardiac transplant patients remained genomically stable, despite exposure to host defenses and antimicrobial agents.

Pulsed field electrophoresis of genomic restriction fragments for the detection of nosocomial Legionella pneumophila in hospital water supplies.
Ten Legionella pneumophila strains isolated from different sources were analyzed according to their restriction fragment patterns obtained by cleavage of genomic DNA with NotI and SfiI and separation by pulsed field electrophoresis. Three L. pneumophila isolates from a nosocomial outbreak in Lübeck (Germany) and three other L. pneumophila strains independently isolated from a water tap located ...
متن کاملNosocomial Legionnaires' disease caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 5: laboratory and epidemiologic implications.
Environmental monitoring and clinical surveillance for Legionella species were done for 12 months as recommended by the Allegheny County Health Department (Pittsburgh). The water system of a hospital was found to be colonized with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 5. Three patients with nosocomial L. pneumophila serogroup 5 disease were subsequently diagnosed after laboratory tests for legionell...
متن کاملPersistence of Legionella in hospital water supplies and nosocomial Legionnaires' disease.
The molecular epidemiology of clinical and environmental Legionella species isolates was studied in seven hospitals from 1989 to 2006. The number of environmental pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns ranged from one to nine according to the hospital. Genomic PFGE pattern persistence was observed in 71% of the hospitals, even after 17 years in some hospitals, and the relationship bet...
متن کاملSeeding and Establishment of Legionella pneumophila in Hospitals: Implications for Genomic Investigations of Nosocomial Legionnaires’ Disease
Background Legionnaires' disease is an important cause of hospital-acquired pneumonia and is caused by infection with the bacterium Legionella. Because current typing methods often fail to resolve the infection source in possible nosocomial cases, we aimed to determine whether whole-genome sequencing (WGS) could be used to support or refute suspected links between cases and hospitals. We focuse...
متن کاملGenomic Analysis Reveals Novel Diversity among the 1976 Philadelphia Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak Isolates and Additional ST36 Strains
Legionella pneumophila was first recognized as a cause of severe and potentially fatal pneumonia during a large-scale outbreak of Legionnaires' disease (LD) at a Pennsylvania veterans' convention in Philadelphia, 1976. The ensuing investigation and recovery of four clinical isolates launched the fields of Legionella epidemiology and scientific research. Only one of the original isolates, "Phila...
